In August 2017, EW Production Services Ltd were delighted to have been awarded the contract to deliver the full production elements for Boyzone and Ocean Colour Scene on Hastings Pier. Thousands of concert goers packed onto the pier August bank holiday weekend of 2017, to enjoy a live concert from two of the most successful bands in the UK: Ocean Colour Scene and Boyzone.
Irish pop stars Boyzone gave the unique sell-out performance ahead of their 25th anniversary, that’s coming up in 2018. With twenty-four years together, 25 million record sales, seven hit studio albums, six number one singles and hundreds of thousands of ticket sales; Ronan, Keith, Mikey and Shane showed that they still have real pulling power with the incredible live concert.
Birmingham formed rock band, Ocean Colour Scene, who had played alongside Oasis on their 1995 tour, gave an incredible and intimate performance on Hastings Pier to thousands of dedicated fans. With five Top 10 albums, a number one hit in 1997 and seventeen Top 40 singles to date, the band were phenomenal and proved that they could still get a crowd jumping.
Hastings Pier is a great venue and has had some fantastic artists such as: The Rolling Stones, The Clash, Sex Pistols and more! For this particular event, EW Production Services Ltd were tasked with providing sound, lighting, staging, power and crew for the weekend concert, where Boyzone performed to an intimate crowd whilst we provided the complete production infrastructure.
Our 10m x 6m mobile trailer stage was deployed for the event, the perfect stage to use with it’s quick deployment and dismantle time, whilst also being in line with the specific weight loadings the pier has in place.
For lighting we predominantly turned to Chauvet Lighting to fulfil the rider request of wash, spot and beam moving heads, as well as generic lighting, with the addition of some Clay Paky Sharpies. All of the lighting was controlled via high end systems, Road Hog 4 as a rider request for Boyzone and Ocean Colour Scene requested a Avolites Pearl Expert Pro with touch wing.
Our lighting kit for the event consisted of:
12 x Chauvet Rogue R2 washes
6 x Chauvet Ovation E-910 FC LED profile
8 x Chauvet Hybrid 140 SR
12 x Chauvet Colorado 1
4 x Chauvet Colordash Quad 12 1 x Chauvet AM Haze
6 x Clay Paky Sharpy
4 x 4-way blinders
Though Hastings Pier is in an incredible venue, being on the end of the pier has always had it’s difficulties – predominantly the weather and the chance of high cross winds.
After conversations with Vortice AV the UK distributor for DAS Audio we were confident that this system is the system for us after seeing and hearing about case studies from across Europe and America we decided to embrace this and help give DAS a stand in the UK market. The rider stated Lacoustics as the main FOH system however, as stated we had heard DAS previously and a visit to their factory in Valencia it was a no brainer that this product was more than capable of this event. Boyzone and Ocean colour Scenes engineers were more than happy with what the system delivered, OCS’s engineer actually wanted the specification of the system as he liked it so much.
The Aero series 2 products from DAS are high end line array systems that provide unrivalled output, without any loss of intelligibility – even in the high speed winds encountered on Hastings Pier. The Aero 20A is compact, very easy to deploy thanks to it’s ingenious rigging system and, provides advanced control over every cabinet through the DASnet control software. For infills 2 hangs of Aero 8A were deployed.
In terms of monitors, EW specifically used DAS road 12A’s, a DAS road 15A and a DAS LX118A made part of the drum fill.
Our audio kit was complete with:
16 x DAS Audio Aero 20A
24 x DAS Audio Aero 8A
8 x DAS Audio UX218A
4 x DAS Audio LX218A
6 x DAS Audio LX 212RA
2 x DAS Audio LX-118A
Microphones were a necessity for the event, but EW also supplied 12 ways of in ear monitoring by using G3 Sennheiser systems.
Meanwhile, we used two Digico SD8 consoles and racks for our choice for FOH and monitor desk, offering optimised control and also as per rider request.
We were also tasked with building a 30ft x 20ft raised viewing platform with a ramp allowing wheel chair users the optimum viewing position, meaning everyone was able to enjoy the concert.
A FOH position and monitor world was also built, utilising over 40 sections of Litedeck to complete these extra raised areas..
Not only were we responsible for ensuring sound, lighting and staging were perfect but we were also in charge of all the power distribution across the site.
Our power distribution enabled the concessions to trade and most importantly enabled the bar to be able to pull pints.
With the concert finishing at approximately 22:30, our team was clear of the site by 3am. Everyone did an incredible job, working together to provide an excellent concert experience for all.
Our client, the promoter, was extremely happy, saying: ‘I thought you and the team were all great and we would be more than happy to work with you guys again’ after thanking us for the service was provided.
